Get Ethics Approval for Experiments

Page history last edited by Jim Davies 6 years, 3 months ago

If you are an honours student working on your honours project, you can use the the cognitive science SONA system and the

CUREB-A ethics board. Write up your ethics proposal, and Jim will forward it to the chair who will submit it on her behalf. Participants using SONA are compensated with course credit.

Students working on experiments that are not honours projects will need to use the general university ethics board. You will need to find a way to compensate participants yourself.

In either case, you will need to write up an ethics proposal. Please use the file format Lastname-ethics-v01.docx

and you will have many versions before Jim is satisfied with them. Whenever you make a new edit, increment the version number in the filename.

Also you will need to complete the TCPS 2 Tutorial Course on Research Ethics training.

There is an online ethics system for research with human participants, so all new submissions and renewals go through the system.

I would like you to submit all your applications (including ones that you have recently submitted as a hard copy) to the system following this procedure (please read and follow carefully!):

1.     Login at: http://134.117.49.190:8080/

2.     Before you can login into the system, you may be notified/required to install Flash version 9. Just follow the process and install Flash.

3.     Once you have Flash in your browser, try again.

4.     You are supposed to get to a LogIn page. Your login is you email address: jim@jimdavies.org, and Password is: FvpZITbl.

5.     Click on New. This would lead you to a form page, quite similar to the cover page we use now. Fill it in. If you are the sole researcher make sure you enter your name also as a PI. If you have someone else as a PI and their name is not in the system – let me know and I’ll add their name to the data base.

6.     In case of submitting renewal requests, add to the title:"Renewal to study 07-xxx".

7.     When you click the Submit at the bottom, you will be asked to attach the document that you regularly attach as a hardcopy to the hard-copy cover page. In your case you can skip this step unless there are changes to the previously approved study in which case you will need to outline the changes in a document. Any additional researchers that are not in the data base, add their names in the field :"Other Data".

8.     If all was successful, you should see it in the Application in Progress in the main page.

Adding a Researcher
