How to grade the essay and term paper

Page history last edited by Jim Davies 1 year, 6 months ago

First, it's important to read the relevant sections of the class syllabus for CGSC1001, especially the grading rubrics.

Students have to do one writing assignment. They may pick the ESSAY or the TERM PAPER. They may not do more than one. The TA in charge of assigning papers to you will send out an email telling you the range of students you need to mark. You are expected to have these marks in within two weeks of getting this email.

General tips for grading

When in doubt, be lenient. It's easy for grad students to forget the writing skills of 18-year-olds.

If you find a bit of a paper that seems really better written than the rest of the essay, search for it on google. It might be plagiarized.

Always sign your name in the comments, so the student knows who to reach out to if they have questions.

Always give comments to help them become better writers. Your marking should be a learning experience for them. Feel free to also give compliments. We want them to love writing.

The Essay

The student is expected to read one of three popular science books (exactly which ones are specified in the syllabus) and write an essay about the book and a topic from the lectures.

If they are writing about a book that is not in the syllabus, they might be stealing an essay from a previous semester. Plagiarism.

The Term Paper

Plagiarism

If you detect plagiarism, let jim.davies@gmail.com know:

     student name and number

     which writing assignment they did

quotation from their paper that was plagiarized

link to or page number of where they stole it from

With this information, Jim can fill out a plagiarism report.
