Equations in Word

by Jonathan Gagne

Using equation in word is a bit of a headache, but if you are writing a paper with lots of equations, here is a better way:

First of, you need to use 2007+, otherwise the eq. editor is so bad... well lets just say its really bad.

Anyways, you can add equation numbers, cross reference, and add and remove equations without having to change all the equations numbers and references.  Here is the link in case you want it:

Also, if you want to use it for your appendices, I wrote a quick hack so it starts the equation at A.x, instead of the Arabic number from the previous chapter 4.x, 5.x, etc.

- Add a new chapter to after the first appendix title like you would any other chapter
- Right click on the ‘new chapter symbol’
- Toggle Field Codes
- Change first “\n” to “\r1”

- Right click on an appendix ‘equation number’
- Toggle Field Codes
- Change first “Arabic” to “Alphabetic”
- Select all field code text, right click and then Toggle Field Codes
- Copy and paste the altered equation number over all other appendix equations

- Press “ctrl+shft+u” to update

Now you can treat every appendix chapter like a regular one.
